The answer is Fig tree. This heat lover and draught tolerant fruit tree surprisingly grows in the lower mainland without too much trouble.
Figs are among the oldest fruits known to humankind and are members of the Moraceae family, which includes the mulberry.
It is entirely unjust that the leaves of this lovely tree have been so maligned throughout history, likely due to their part in the biblical story of Adam and Eve.
Fig tree is also mentioned in Buddha's story, this was the tree where Siddhartha found enlightenment while sitting under it.
Surprisingly these are one of the easiest fruiting trees to grow, being almost completely insect and disease resistant. We recommend containing the roots either in the garden or a large pot. When the roots are constrained, the plant puts more energy into fruiting – which I think is what we all want!
The ultimate bonus of growing figs locally is their amazing flavour — one bite and you’re hooked. They are low in calories, high in calcium, and can lower blood sugar.
