Mop-head and lace-cap hydrangeas produce pink or blue flowers depending on the chemistry of the soil they're grown in.
Flowers may change colour planted, or over time if the pH levels aren't maintained.
Making dramatic changes to pH levels quickly can damage the plant, so follow product instructions carefully.
Before beginning test the pH level of the soil for planting.
For blue flowers use soil with a pH of 5.2-5.5 (acidic).
Apply a soil acidifier, such as aluminium
sulfate or elemental sulfur.
For pink flowers use soil with a pH of 6.0-6.2 (alkaline).
Apply high phosphorus fertilisers, or garden lime to discourage aluminium uptake.
Purple shades can sometimes be attained by a pH somewhere between acidic and alkaline.
Now, have fun :)
